We Make it Easy to Make a Difference
The Mission of HandsOn Northwest North Carolina

HandsOn Northwest North Carolina strengthens our community by building the capacity of our nonprofits and increasing volunteerism. We connect nonprofits with the resources needed to develop capacity, and we connect volunteers with nonprofits needing services.  We work closely with the 350+ different nonprofits in our network, and we touch the lives of thousands of volunteers each year. While we have a central focus in Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County, our core services are available to organizations and citizens in the surrounding communities of Davie, Davidson, Yadkin and Surry.

Nikki Burris

Nikki Burris has worked with BOOKMARKS, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to engaging and inspiring readers of all ages, championing literacy, and promoting cultural diversity through reading and writing, on their Planning Committee since 2007 and took over as Membership Coordinator in 2008. She became a Board member in 2010. Nikki’s enthusiasm and hard work has helped BOOKMARKS to gain new sponsors and partners as well as expand their membership program.

Ginger Hendricks, Executive Director of BOOKMARKS, states, “Nikki is always sharing and brainstorming new ideas for how to make our organization stronger. In addition, she is willing to do the work to make these ideas become reality. We are proud to have Nikki on our team!”

Professionally, Nikki joined Salemtowne Continuing Care Retirement Community (also a HandsOn NWNC Supporting Partner!) as the Director of Admissions in 2005, having previously served as Director for CONTACT Hopelines, Family Services, Inc. in Winston Salem, NC; Social Worker II for Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center; and Resident Services Manager for Triad United Methodist Home. Nikki earned a Master in Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Currently, she serves as the Secretary of the Board of Directors for The Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston Salem; Vice-Chair of Social Services Day Program Committee for Leadership Winston-Salem; Member of the ECHO Network, Inc.; and is a 2006 graduate of Leadership Winston-Salem.

FEATURED ORGANIZATION

Prodigals Community

Founded in 1986, Prodigals Community is a long-term rehab community working with those who have chronically struggled with drug and alcohol abuse. Combining a program of recovery, spirituality, and job training, Prodigals Community works with men who truly want to turn their lives around. The hope is to create a women’s community as well, but presently Sally Dudley Harper, Executive Director, and her staff are working to build on Prodigals' noble foundation and develop a spiritually based recovery community that can be modeled throughout the country.

Statistics about addiction and the need for places like Prodigals Community abound, but it is the tangible effect their work has on individuals that serves as the greatest motivation for Harper and her staff.  The retention rate has grown from 35% in 2009 to 60% at the end of 2011, a significant impact. Just ask Jessie, a 49 year old graduate who was homeless, living in active addiction, and estranged from his family. Prodigals Community offered him a rope, and with the grace of God he reached out and grabbed it. Through months of hard work, Jessie completed the program and is on the staff at Prodigals Community, leading the painting crew of Prodigals Property Services (PPS). His words capture the ministry of Prodigals Community vividly:

“Prodigals did not unlock the gates of heaven and let me in;it opened the gates of hell and let me out.”

Prodigals Community is located at 1024 Waughtown Street, Winston-Salem, NC, 27017.  Their telephone number is (336) 785-0770.  You can learn more about their programs on their website and become a volunteer today!
