Nonprofit Essentials-Governance

The Governance Class will provide a practical look at nonprofit governance, including organizational life cycles and best practices. Topics include the role of the board, building an effective board, the relationship and roles of the board and staff, and how to monitor and evaluate the Executive Director. The class will be taught by Barbara Lentz, Associate Professor of Legal Writing with Wake Forest University. The Nonprofit Essentials classes are taught primarily by Wake Forest University staff, faculty, and alums. Participants who finish all classes will receive a Certificate of Completion from Wake Forest University. All classes include a networking lunch from 12:00 to 12:40 pm. Alyson has over seventeen years of practical experience as a fundraising professional in a variety of non-profit settings. Nine of those years were spent in a Director of Development capacity. In 2006 Alyson transitioned into a consulting role and has since worked closely with a wide range of non-profits, from national organizations to small two- to three-person shops in education, health and human services, the arts, animal welfare, conservation, foundations, and more. Her consulting acumen includes • New software implementations • Managing legacy software conversions and database overhauls, including merging multiple organizations/data centers into one • Systems integration design and project management • Developing and overseeing the roll out of process-improvement changes • Producing style guides and other process documentation Her fundraising experience includes corporate development, membership, annual giving, special events, grant writing, and capital campaigns;and her nonprofit management experience includes strategic planning, budgeting, volunteer development, staff structuring, and training. Hospitality + Service

Many nonprofit and social sector organizations operate in an environment where clients may feel a heightened sense of vulnerability or distress. Ensuring client dignity, while delivering much needed services, may be among nonprofits’ greatest challenges. By equipping staff and volunteers to improve the culture of hospitality in their organizations and enhance client service, organizations can address this potential obstacle. Hospitality + Service is a tailored training program that leverages Hilton Worldwide’s internal Team Member trainings to infuse hospitality into the daily practices of nonprofit and social sector organizations with the goal of developing a strong culture of hospitality over time. The curriculum is consists of seven modules that are based on the S.E.R.V.E. principles of hospitality: Sincere, Empathetic, Respectful, Visible and Engaging everyone every time. The curriculum also incorporates communication skills activities designed to improve communication and connections with clients, creating warm and welcoming environments and effectively managing challenging situations. The workshop will be taught be Melissa Thompson and Jen Brown. Melissa started her career in hospitality at age 16 when she took her first job at McDonald’s. She realized quickly that she had a gift for connecting with people from all different backgrounds and enjoyed serving people. Melissa received an AAS in Hospitality Management in 1987 and has held the designation of Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA) since 2005. From 1991 to 2010, she acted as General Manager at 6 hotel properties in 5 cities. Her last for-profit sector position was managing two properties in Winston-Salem. She joined SECU Family House in August of 2010 as the Director of Operations and is managing the daily operations and a staff of about 13 people along with many volunteers. She is currently attending Salem College, finishing the bachelor’s degree she set aside in 1991, and is looking forward to graduating in May 2017 with a B.A. in Communications with a minor in Not-for-Profit Management. In her spare time, Melissa stays busy as a board member and Membership Committee Chair for the Healthcare Hospitality Network (HHN), volunteering with her church, and spending time with her husband Pierce, two teenage children Marissa and Matthew, and shih-terrier Sundae. Jen Brown (Oleniczak) is the Founder and Artistic Director of The Engaging Educator. Through EE, her pedagogical approach of Improv as Continuing Education has reached thousands of people – all non-actors! – with the awesomeness that is Improv. Before starting EE, she was an actor in Milwaukee, Chicago and New York. After a few too many waitressing gigs, she found herself at the City College of New York, getting a degree in Art History and working in museums as a museum educator. She realized the field lacked the ‘how you say it’ training and boom – The Engaging Educator was born. Since 2012, Jen has given two TEDx Talks on the power of Improv, grown EE to three locations in NYC, Winston-Salem, NC and LA, and recently began The Engaging Educator Foundation, a 501(c)(3) which offers free and low cost Improv workshops for educators, at-risk adults, teens and students on the Autism Spectrum. Along with Improv-based workshops, she is passionate about Autism acceptance within cultural organizations, and loves to personally collaborate with museums on the creation of socialization programs. Jen holds degrees and accreditation from Marquette University, City College of New York, St. Joseph’s University and Second City and the school of Yes, And. Currently, Jen happily resides in Winston-Salem with her husband, who she met while teaching an improv class – and no, he wasn’t the best person in class, in fact, he was the worst. This workshop will be held on October 13 from 12 – 4:30 pm at Hampton Inn on Hanes Mall Boulevard. Fees include lunch and take home materials.

HandsOn Board Basics

Board members play a critical role in the success of organizations. Strong, knowledgeable boards help organizations gain credibility, build financial resources by providing access to the community, and serve as advocates and ambassadors of the organization. Board Basics will focus on the roles and responsibilities of individuals serving on the boards of current or emerging nonprofit organizations, boards experiencing difficulties in their effectiveness, and individuals considering joining a nonprofit board for the first time. Topics will include a review of 501(c)(3) laws and regulations, the purpose and content of By Laws, board governance, board roles and responsibilities, board/staff relationships, board policies, executive committee structure and responsibilities, attributes of quality boards, key benchmarks for effective boards, and other topics of interest as identified by workshop participants. TThe workshop will be led by Karl Yena. Karl retired from RJR Nabisco, Inc. as Director of Worldwide Organization Development & Training. He served over 20 years as a senior level manager providing consulting services to RJR corporate and operating company management of Del Monte, Nabisco, Sea Land Shipping, Kentucky Fried Chicken, etc. on a national and international (over 30 countries) basis in the areas of strategic and operational planning, organizational analysis, staffing structure, training and leadership development. He also served as Special Assistant to the Chairman and CEO. An avid volunteer, Karl works annually with over 100 nonprofits in North Carolina. He provides on-going mentoring/coaching to several current Executive Directors and assistance to municipalities, churches, civic organizations/associations, and non-profits in the areas of strategic planning; board development & assessment; staff development training; coaching; business planning; organization analysis & structure; executive search processes; potential merger discussions; mediation/facilitation; and human resources policies. Most recently, Karl has worked with: CCCS, Food Bank, YWCA, Forsyth Medical Center, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem State University, United Way of Forsyth, Hands-On Northwest North Carolina, Experiment in Self Reliance, Piedmont Down Syndrome Support Network, Arts NC, HHH, Association of Agency Executives, Arts Council, Forsyth County Government, NC Sickle Cell, NC Professional Health Administrators, Lexington Housing Community Development Corporation, The Children’s Home, United Way of Davie, United Way of Davidson, Hispanic League, Piedmont Opera, and NC Leadership Institute. Nonprofit Board Speed Dating

If you are looking to make a positive impact, collaborate with people who share your values and interests, broaden your leadership skills, or expand your personal and professional networks, then maybe you are ready to serve on a nonprofit board or committee! One of the best ways to find out about different nonprofits and their board opportunities is through our Nonprofit Board Speed Dating. Like a typical “speed dating,” you’ll have the opportunity to talk directly with representatives of various nonprofits in 10 minute rounds about their organization and needs in terms of board and board committee members. Prior to the event, we’ll send you the mission statements and basic board information from the participating nonprofits. This will help you focus your questions and maximize your 10 minute speed-dating rounds. Although board/committee placement is not guaranteed, the event will familiarize you with different nonprofits and their culture, programs, and people, before committing to serve as a board/committee member. Kim Klein Workshop: What’s New, What’s Hot, What’s Over, What’s Not?

Over the past two decades, all of us who work in fundraising have commented endlessly on how much harder it is to raise the money we need. This, in spite of the fact that we have wonderful new tools with online platforms, user friendly and efficient databases, and tons of affordable (often free) information on how to conduct any fundraising strategy. Fundraising should be easier than it was 30 years ago. But it is not and it is not hard to figure out why: while fundraising itself may have gotten easier, the number of organizations needing money and the cost of being an organization has risen exponentially. Loss of tax revenues mean that public schools, libraries, and even public health departments seek foundation grants and gifts from individuals. Success in fundraising depends on knowing what works and what doesn’t and may mean retooling your fundraising program. What are the new ideas that will help you and what traditional practices still work? What do you need to abandon? HandsOn NWNC and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation are pleased to bring Kim Klein to Winston-Salem to help work through these issues! Kim is the author of five books, including Reliable Fundraising in Unreliable Times, which won the McAdam Book Award. Her classic text, Fundraising for Social Change, now in its sixth edition, is widely used in the field and in university degree programs. Her other books include Fundraising for the Long Haul, Ask and You Shall Receive, and Fundraising in Times of Crisis. She is the series editor of the Kim Klein Fundraising Series at Jossey Bass Publishers. She was a member of the Building Movement Project where she worked on a project called Nonprofits Talking Taxes. Kim is a Fellow with On the Commons and blogs at Kim Klein and the Commons Blogspot. She has provided training and consultation in all 50 United States, five Canadian provinces and 21 other countries. She is a lecturer at the School of Social Welfare at the University of California, Berkeley, and has served as guest faculty at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley and Concordia University in Montreal. Kim co-founded the Grassroots Fundraising Journal in 1981 and was its publisher for 25 years. Kim Klein Workshop: Donor Relations and Communications: What For?

Many otherwise solid fundraising programs run aground on their inability to create and implement systems for asking the donors they have to consider giving bigger gifts. More paid staff is not the answer. The solution is a strong volunteer team trained to do personal asking working towards a goal. HandsOn NWNC and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation are pleased to bring Kim Klein to Winston-Salem to help us explore how upgrading works and how to find and maintain the volunteer team who will do the asking and actually learn to enjoy it. She has provided training and consultation in all 50 United States, five Canadian provinces and 21 other countries. This course is designed to give an overview of nonprofit budgeting and finance, including financial terminology, the components of nonprofit financial statements, and a working understanding of a statement of financial position (balance sheet) and a statement of activities and changes in net assets (income statement). The course will also address how to build a budget, use performance standards to help make spending decisions, and address “red flag” issues. The class will be taught by Chuck Kraft. Chuck was born and raised in Philadelphia (he talks funny). He came to Winston-Salem to attend Wake Forest University on football scholarship where he was a member of the 1979 Tangerine Bowl Team (some say he pulls for the wrong team). Upon graduating in 1980 with an accounting degree he entered public accounting working for two local CPA firms for ten years. In 1990 he entered the non-profit world serving the YMCA of NWNC as their CFO for 14 years. Chuck then served with Smart Start of Forsyth County for eight years, the last five as their Executive Director. He became the Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem, Inc. in September 2012. Chuck has served the House as a volunteer board and/or committee member since 1986. Throughout the years Chuck has given his time to numerous other community boards (including HandsOn NWNC, his favorite) and is very involved with his church (that laundry list just means he is old). Chuck and his wife Sue have two children, a daughter who attends NC State University and son at Reagan High School. Outside the office Chuck enjoys being a fan(atic) for the Philadelphia Eagles, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and the Reagan High School Soccer Team! The course offers a complete overview of the development function, featuring the most current information and techniques, and will provide an overview of skills, strategies and program components for individuals with zero to four years of fundraising experience. The class will be taught by Michelle Speas, CFRE. Mrs. Speas brings over 20 years’ experience in Japan, Africa and the United States to her executive leadership, including her current role as Chief Development and Public Relations Officer at Family Services, one of the Triad’s largest nonprofit organizations and an anchor agency in Forsyth County committed to strengthening the safety, security, and well-being of the most vulnerable women, children and families in our community. The majority of her career, she worked as a development officer, directing annual, capital, and planned giving campaigns and spearheading communication and public relations efforts. She also served as the first Chief Executive Officer of one of NC’s largest private family foundations. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Arts (MA) degree in from the University of Mississippi at Oxford. Mrs. Speas is an Adjunct Professor at Salem College and has been a member of the NC Triad Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals since 1997. She is also a member of the NC Planned Giving Council and served on over a dozen Triad nonprofit boards including: Smart Start, Family Services, Second Harvest Food Bank, United Way and the Winston-Salem Youth Chorus. Strong, knowledgeable boards help organizations gain credibility, build financial resources by providing access to the community, and serve as advocates and ambassadors of the organization. To help nonprofits increase the effectiveness and leadership capacity of their boards, HandsOn NWNC is offering a workshop specifically geared for board members who are in leadership positions or who are moving towards leadership roles on nonprofit boards as officers or committee chairs. Topics include a review of board officer roles and responsibilities, committee chair accountabilities, attributes of effective board and committee leaders, board policies, executive committee structure and responsibilities, key benchmarks for effective boards, a self-assessment leadership instrument, planning processes and tools, leading and conducting effective meetings, group communications, appraising board and committee effectiveness, and other topics of interest as identified by workshop participants. The workshop will be led by Karl Yena. Karl retired from RJR Nabisco, Inc. as Director of Worldwide Organization Development & Training. He served over 20 years as a senior level manager providing consulting services to RJR corporate and operating company management of Del Monte, Nabisco, Sea Land Shipping, Kentucky Fried Chicken, etc. on a national and international (over 30 countries) basis in the areas of strategic and operational planning, organizational analysis, staffing structure, training and leadership development. He also served as Special Assistant to the Chairman and CEO. An avid volunteer, Karl works annually with over 100 nonprofits in North Carolina. He provides on-going mentoring/coaching to several current Executive Directors and assistance to municipalities, churches, civic organizations/associations, and non-profits in the areas of strategic planning; board development & assessment; staff development training; coaching; business planning; organization analysis & structure; executive search processes; potential merger discussions; mediation/facilitation; and human resources policies. Reynolds Charitable Trust, an independent foundation in Winston-Salem, North Carolina that funds healthcare statewide and human services in Forsyth County. Over the past seventeen years, Lori has built the evaluation capacity of the Trust, worked to improve its knowledge management and grants management processes, and helped to shape strategic shifts for greater impact at the Trust. Lori is a Truman Scholar, a national program for graduate studies towards a career in public service, and has an MSW from the University of North Carolina and an MBA from Wake Forest University. Attention all mid level female staff! If you are currently working in a nonprofit and looking for leadership development, a better understanding of nonprofit operations, and the opportunity to meet other women like yourself-come to our information session on Thursday, May 12th, to learn more about the Women’s Emerging Leaders Program. This 10 month program is designed just for you and provides the skills to help women move into leadership positions within the nonprofit sector. We’ll discuss the program and what to expect, as well as review the application and answer any questions. The program is only open to mid level female staff currently working in nonprofits serving people in Forsyth, Davidson, Davie, Stokes, Surry and Yadkin Counties. The information session will be held at The Winston-Salem Foundation building located at 751 West Fourth Street. Click here for a map to the building. To gain access to the building, cross 4th Street and walk along the side of the building adjacent to Broad Street. There is a pedestrian access gate that faces the Broad Street sidewalk. Enter the passcode 7510 to unlock the gate and you’ll be able to access the back of the building where you’ll find the main entrance to the elevators. Take the elevators to the 3rd floor and exit to the left. Go down the hall to the Burress Family Center for Philanthropy and the meeting room will be on your left in the Pfefferkorn Conference Room. Nonprofit Essentials-Advocacy and Communications

Nonprofits play an active role in shaping public policy. This class examines successful advocacy strategies used by nonprofits to advance their organization’s mission for the public good while considering related legal, ethical and tax issues, and measuring the success of your advocacy. Course includes coaching on how to tell your story in a way that conveys the importance and value of your mission. The class will be taught by Barbara Lentz, Associate Professor of Legal Writing with Wake Forest University. The Nonprofit Essentials classes are taught primarily by Wake Forest University staff, faculty, and alums. Participants who finish all classes will receive a Certificate of Completion from Wake Forest University. All classes include a networking lunch from 12:00 to 12:40 pm. A Reminder about the HandsOn NWNC Helping Hands Scholarship Program!

This program, made possible by a generous grant from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, offers partial scholarships to nonprofit staff and board members in Forsyth, Davidson, Davie, Stokes, Surry and Yadkin Counties who wish to attend the Nonprofit Essentials classes offered by Wake Forest University’s Institute for Public Engagement as a way to increase their competency in areas critical to the daily operation of their organization.  This program reflects the role HandsOn NWNC believes education plays in increasing the capacity of nonprofit organizations in our region.
